IELTS Speaking Questions

The IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is an international test used to measure English language proficiency worldwide. It is important for education, immigration, and professional purposes. The IELTS speaking test is conducted face-to-face between the examiner and the participant. In the 15-minute speaking test, a variety of questions are asked to measure the candidate’s speech skills.

IELTS Speaking Topics
Anyone who will take an internationally valid IELTS test should have knowledge of the various formats and types of the test. The IELTS examination consists of four main sections: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The IELTS speaking test is conducted face-to-face between the examiner and the participant. In the 15-minute speaking test, a variety of questions are asked to measure the candidate’s speech skills.

Section one: Introduction and Interview
In this section, the examiner first checks the identity details and asks questions to get to know the candidate. Questions are often about the candidate’s personal life, family, school or work.

Introduction and Interview topic examples:
Where are you from?
Can you tell me about your family?
What do you like to do in your free time?
Do you enjoy your current job/studies?

Section two: Long Turn

This part takes about 3-4 minutes. The candidate is given a subject and allowed one minute to think about what they are going to say. During this time, they can take notes. Then, during the remaining minutes, the candidate is expected to speak on the subject.
Long Turn topic examples:
What is the name of the book?
Who is the author?
What is it about?
Why did you like/dislike it?

Section Three: Discussion
This part takes about 4-5 minutes. In this section, the candidate is expected to have a more general discussion on the topic discussed in section 2. For example, if the candidate talks about books in part two, then in this part, they should discuss topics such as their reading habits, how long they’ve been reading books, and the importance of literature in more detail and generally.

Discussion topic examples:
Do you think reading books is more important than watching movies?
How has technology changed the way people read books compared to traditional books?
