Past Continuous Passive Voice: Explanation with Examples

Verbs are words that are used with a subject to say what something/someone does or what happens to them, or simply to inform the observer about their state of being. These verbs can be used with various tenses depending on the time that the action happens. The past continuous tense is a verb tense that shows an action or event that was going on or continuing for a short period of time in the past. The past continuous tense in passive voice is used when you want to focus on the person or the thing that was receiving the action in the past.

How to Make Past Continuous Passive Sentences

In the passive voice of the Past Continuous tense, we focus on who/what was being acted upon or receiving the action at a certain time in the past. The object of the active sentence becomes the subject of the passive sentence. To form a sentence in passive voice of past continuous tense, we use the following rules:

We convert the object of the Active Voice Sentence into the subject of the Passive Voice Sentence.
We use the auxiliary verb was/were according to the subject of Passive Voice Sentence, which would be the object of the Active Voice Sentence.
We use the additional auxiliary verb “being” with was/ were, to show the continuous tense.
We use the past participle form of the verb.
We use the word “by”, to show the doer of the action.
We convert the subject of the Active Voice Sentence into the object after that.
We add the remaining words in the Active Voice sentence at last.

In an active voice, the subject is performing the action. It is always known who is doing the action. In a passive voice, the subject is the receiver of the action. It is not always clear who is doing the action. To give the information about the carrier of the action, we use the preposition “by” followed by the agent of the action.
